Medical Care

Access to quality healthcare remains a significant challenge for many families in Honduras, particularly those living in rural and underserved communities. For some, the nearest medical provider may be hours away. Even when care is available, the cost of transportation, appointments, medications, or treatment can place it beyond a family's reach.

Through IRC and its ministries, TORCH teams help meet these needs through three levels of medical outreach: ongoing care, mobile medical and dental clinics, and medical equipment and supply support.

Clinica de Esperanza

At the heart of our medical ministry is Clinica de Esperanza (Clinic of Hope) in Santa Ana, Honduras.

Opened in 2007, Clinica de Esperanza grew from a vision of founder and Medical Missions Director Gayle Davidson, who began serving on short-term medical mission teams in Honduras in 1999. While village medical clinics provided valuable care to thousands of people, Gayle recognized an additional need: families needed access to healthcare that continued after the mission team went home.

That vision became Clinica de Esperanza.

Today, the clinic provides free medical and dental care to individuals and families who may otherwise have limited access to treatment. The clinic provides primary care, dental services, preventive care, medications, follow-up treatment, and other services designed to address both immediate concerns and long-term health needs.

Through the years, tens of thousands of patients have received medical and dental care through the clinic and its outreach programs.

But behind every number is a person—a mother concerned about her child, an older adult living with a chronic condition, a family unable to afford medication, or someone who simply needs to know that they have not been forgotten.

Our goal is to treat every patient with compassion, dignity, respect, and the love of Christ.

Mobile Medical & Dental Clinics

For families living in remote villages, traveling to a medical facility may not be possible. So whenever possible, we take the care to them.

TORCH medical teams travel into underserved communities to provide free medical and dental clinics. Depending on the needs of the community and the professionals serving with the team, these clinics may include general medical care, dental treatment, health screenings, medications, preventive care, and health education.

Some clinics serve hundreds of patients in a single day.

These outreach clinics require much more than doctors, nurses, and dentists. Volunteers serve throughout the clinic by registering patients, assisting healthcare providers, interpreting, organizing the pharmacy, distributing medications, helping families understand instructions, managing patient flow, entertaining children, providing water, praying with families, and simply sitting with people while they wait.

Every person on the team has an opportunity to serve.

The goal is not simply to see as many patients as possible. We want each person who comes through a clinic to know that they matter and that someone cares about their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Sometimes that means providing medication or dental treatment. Other times it may mean listening to someone's story, holding a child's hand, praying with a family, or offering encouragement during a difficult season.

All of it is ministry.

Medical Equipment & Supplies

Our medical outreach extends beyond the patients our teams are able to treat directly.

IRC also coordinates the collection and relocation of medical equipment and supplies from the United States to Honduras, helping place valuable resources into hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities where they can continue to serve patients.

Medical equipment that is no longer being utilized by a hospital or healthcare facility in the United States may still represent a tremendous improvement for a facility in Honduras.

Through generous donations and partnerships, IRC helps collect, organize, transport, and distribute medical equipment and supplies ranging from basic clinical materials to larger pieces of specialized equipment.

By connecting available resources with facilities that need them, we are able to extend the impact of our medical ministry far beyond a single mission trip or clinic day.

Caring for the Whole Person

Whether care happens inside Clinica de Esperanza, beneath a temporary clinic in a remote village, or through equipment delivered to a Honduran hospital, our purpose remains the same:

Meet people where they are. Care for them with dignity. Provide the best help we can. And demonstrate the love of Jesus through compassionate service.

Since 2007, Clinica de Esperanza and TORCH medical teams have touched the lives of tens of thousands of individuals and families—and the work continues.
